Inkjet Printing on Three-Dimensional Freeform Objects
Olivier Bürgy, Fritz Bircher, iPrint/HEIA-FR (Switzerland)
This paper presents a new direct-to-shape printing platform enabling digital inkjet printing on three-dimensional freeform objects. Previous work in this field has focused mainly on geometrical shapes. This paper describes a new system that uses a Wavefront OBJ file containing a tessellated description of the object with his texture to generate the trajectory for the robot and the images for the print system. An articulated arm with an inkjet printhead mounted on the end effector follows the surface of the object to print the image. The algorithms used to generate the trajectories and images and the general printing platform will be described in this work.
